If you’re about to start kitesurfing, it’s normal to come across terms like IKO Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 and not be quite sure what they mean. Here’s a simple explanation.
The IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) is the international body that certifies both instructors and students in kitesurfing worldwide. Its levels measure how self-sufficient a rider is on the water — not how skilled they are in absolute terms.
- Level 1 (Beginner): kite control on land and in the water without a board. This is the starting point for every student.
- Level 2 (Advanced Beginner): first attempts at getting up on the board (body drag and water start). Still requires supervision.
- Level 3 (Independent / “3k”): the rider can already ride independently, perform basic upwind riding, and is considered ready to practice without an instructor at familiar spots. This is the level most schools require to rent equipment without taking a lesson.
- Levels 4 and 5 (Advanced / Coach): advanced maneuvers, jumps, and in the case of Level 5, certification to teach.
At Puclaro Kitesurfing we work with you from Level 1, at your own pace, until you feel comfortable riding on your own. If you already have certified prior experience, let us know your level when booking so we can place you in the right class from day one.
