Kitesurfing Basics: Understanding the Wind Window

SO YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING KITESURFING? Learn the wind window and how to move on the water!

Wind Window:

With your back to the wind, imagine the top half of a clock face (9 AM to 3 PM). If the kite is on the AM side, you will go left; if it is on the PM side, you will go right, with 12 o’clock being a neutral point. Looking forward, imagine a quarter of a sphere with color zones going from green to red—depending on which zone the kite is in, it will generate more or less power.

Rider Displacement:

Completely independent of the wind window, this is how we move through space (on land and water) relative to the wind direction.

Downwind: This is when we move with the wind (in the same direction as the wind is blowing).

Upwind: When we move against the wind. We can never sail 100% directly into its direction.

Wind Shadow:

This is caused by any object standing between us and where the wind is coming from, making the airflow turbulent and gusty.
